5 PLACES IN STROUDSBURG YOU HAVE TO SEE!

May 4th, 2022 by

Tucked away in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, Stroudsburg is a picturesque mountain town with a ton of history dating all the way back to the 1700s. Originally founded in 1799 by Col. Jacob Stroud, Stroudsburg was initially built for the Stroud family to reside in — as time went on it became a fairly popular town.

With over 200 years in existence, it is no wonder Stroudsburg is such a historically significant place. Being such a historical town, Stroudsburg and some of its unmistakable landmarks have found their way onto the National Register of Historic Places. We list some of these historic places in this blog, so keep an eye out!

SHERMAN THEATER

A great place to go any night of the week in Stroudsburg, the Sherman Theater is a non-profit theater and concert venue. The theater was originally built in 1928 to be used as a vaudeville house and movie theater but burnt down in 1944. Following the fire, the Sherman Theater continued to operate but unfortunately fell into disrepair by the 1990s.

A decade after the Sherman Theater ceased to host events, investors Richard and Catharine Berkowitz decided to purchase the theater in the early 2000s. The couple had plans to renovate the failing theater, believing it would be a great attraction for the entire town of Stroudsburg to visit once again. In 2004 after years of renovations and repairs, the Sherman Theater finally re-opened it’s doors to the public and began thriving.

Shortly after its re-opening, the Berkowitz teamed up with a team of local non-profit groups to help run the theater. With the support of non-profit organizations and backed by Berkowitz’s own production company, the Sherman Theater continues to thrive even until this very day.

If you’re looking for a great night out with friends and family, you’ll want to make a stop at the Sherman Theater located on 524 Main Street in Stroudsburg. You can find out more about the non-profit Sherman Theater, buy tickets and view upcoming events all on the Sherman Theater website.
